2020.10.30 02:21 NueNesta Struggling with feeling like a bit of a coward

So recently enough, I've finally come to terms with my sexuality after long and repeated fits of denial. And my husband was the first person I've told, and then my best friend, and then my baby cousin (one of the few in my family who isn't LGBT phobic)...

But does anyone else feel, like, awkward coming out to new people? Or the fear of not being believed because of the circumstance of still being with a male partner? (Or the flip side, worried of them asking questions that get too personal about intimacy?)

And because I used to identify (I genuinely thought I was...) bisexual... I feel an added layer of guilt because there already is such a heavy stereotype that bisexuals are just confused and are either straight or gay.

And then there's the issue of dating... We've been considering having an open marriage but it's still just in the discussion phase, not rushing into anything yet... But I notice a lot of WLW on sites and apps seems to be put from dating anyone married to a male or assume that they would have to date the male too (and to be fair I understand where the fear comes from and why)

My life feels like a clusterfuck mess right now. Just needed to vent...

2020.10.25 13:20 Stunning_Treat9298 Questioning. How do I figure this out?

I am just now questioning my sexuality. And I am 50F, also recently started a polyamorous relationship with a very compassionate and emotionally savvy man with about 30 years experience in open relationships and polyamory. I'm extremely loyal and still monogamish, not ready to look for other men at this time but made it clear to him he never needs to stop his life and other connections.
We've had some experiences together with 2 others (male and female, he is bisexual) and I felt nothing other than joy and compersion. Seeing him happy brings me joy.
In addition to feeling a desire to share love with more than one, I'm feeling attraction and desire for sexual relationships with women. Due to the pandemic I am really having difficulty in connecting with other bisexuals or lesbians.
I'm not really shy or anything, but I am extremely conscientious about who I allow into my pandemic bubble. I'm in the medical field and haven't treated any Covid-19 patients in over 4 months. I haven't been to any restaurants or any store other than a grocery or pharmacy since March. My boyfriend is the same.
I am on a dating site reported to be helpful for alternative relationship styles and LGBT+ members. I am honest about my relationship status and my inexperience and getting very few replies. I'm interested in true friendships and personal connections, am not unicorn hunting, and pretty attractive. But old!!! Lol. Does anyone have any suggestions to help me sort out my sexual desires despite my inexperience? Is there anything I'm missing or not doing right at this time?

2020.10.25 03:31 assousa US Secretary of State Pompeo set to boost Indonesian religious reform efforts

By James M. Dorsey
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is set to boost efforts by the world’s largest Muslim movement to recontextualize Islam during a forthcoming visit to Indonesia as part of a three-nation Asian tour. The tour is likely to be the secretary’s last official trip prior to next month’s US presidential election.
Mr. Pompeo’s engagement with Nahdlatul Ulama, a powerful Islamic grouping in Indonesia, with an estimated following of 50 million people, takes on added significance against the backdrop of the Trump administration’s push for a definition of human rights that redefines notions of freedom of religion at the expense of other basic rights in advance of a hard fought election that Donald J. Trump could lose.
It also comes as French President Emmanuel Macron kicked into high gear his self-declared mission of reforming what he has termed an Islam that “is a religion that is in crisis all over the world” in the wake of the gruesome murder of Samuel Paty, a 47-year old teacher.
Mr. Paty was killed by an 18-year old youth of Chechen descent after he used cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed in a class about freedom of expression.
The Indonesia-leg at the end of Mr. Pompeo’s tour, which is first taking him to India and Sri Lanka, similarly comes as Nahdlatul Ulama, an independent civil society movement, competes globally with Saudi, United Arab Emirates, and Turkish state-backed efforts to garner religious soft power and shape the definition of what constitutes moderate Islam.
Nahdlatul Ulama was founded almost a century ago in opposition to Wahhabism, the austere interpretation of Islam, that has largely guided Saudi Arabia since its founding in 1932.
Mr. Pompeo and his top aides are scheduled to participate in two days of events in the Indonesian capital organized by Nahdlatul Ulama to nurture “the shared civilizational aspirations” of Indonesia, the United States and Islam, defined by the group with the Qur’anic phrase that the faith is “a source of universal love and compassion.”
By giving Nahdlatul Ulama the State Department’s seal of approval, Mr. Pompeo is implicitly acknowledging the fact that the group unlike its rivals in the quest for religious soft power has started to put its money where its mouth is.
Unlike its soft power rivals, Nahdlatul Ulama has spelt out its definition of moderate Islam with its adoption in 2015 of the concept of Nusantara (Archipelago) or humanitarian Islam that calls for a full embrace of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights (UNHDR).
Countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE project themselves as models of undefined forms of moderate Islam manifested by engagement in inter-faith dialogue and varying degrees of religious tolerance.
They have, however, stopped short of addressing theologically problematic concepts like that of kafirs or infidels, the Muslim reference to non-Muslims, slavery, dhimmis, people of the book that Islam recognizes but accords a lesser status than Muslims, apostasy, and blasphemy.
They have also manoeuvred in inter-faith gatherings to evade unrestricted support of the UN human rights declaration.
By contrast, Nahdlatul Ulama has taken initial steps in that direction even if it still has a ways to go. Thousands of the group’s religious scholars issued a fatwa or religious opinion that eliminated the notion of infidels, effectively removing one pillar of Muslim perceptions of religious supremacy.
Based on statements by Nahdlatul Ulama leaders, the group’s scholars are likely to next do away with the legal concept of slavery.
The group’s litmus test will be if and when it takes on apostasy and blasphemy, concepts that are certain to be far more emotive and controversial. Nahdlatul Ulama officials say the group has long accepted in practice conversion away from Islam.
Mr. Pompeo’s acknowledgement of Nahdlatul Ulama further suggests that the State Department recognizes that religious reform is more likely to successfully be enacted by independent civil society actors with proper religious credentials and a significant following rather than states.
It is a recognition that by implication highlights the limitations of efforts by states, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Turkey, to define the essence of Islam as well as Mr. Macron’s ambition to solve the faith’s problems for it.
Mr. Pompeo lands in Jakarta shortly after signing the Geneva Consensus Declaration alongside a host of countries that propagate conservative values and rank low on Georgetown University’s Women, Peace and Security Index.
The declaration seeks to promote women’s rights and health and strengthen the family but emphasizes that “in no case should abortion be promoted as a method of family planning.”
It stipulates that there is “no international right to abortion, nor any international obligation on the part of States to finance or facilitate abortion.”
The declaration’s signatories include Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE, Iraq, Sudan, South Sudan, Libya, Egypt, Belarus, Hungary, and Indonesia.
Many of the signatories are members of the Group of Friends, a block of 25 nations in the United Nations that seeks to pre-empt any expansion of rights for girls, women, and LGBT people and weaken international support for the Beijing Declaration, a landmark 1995 agreement that stands as an internationally recognized progressive blueprint for women’s rights.
Much of the group’s positions are coordinated by the Center for Family and Human Rights, or C-Fam, a small but influential far-right group that focuses on abortion, sexual orientation and gender identity. C-Fam has worked closely with the State Department dating back to the administration of US President George W. Bush.
Accompanied by among others Mary Ann Glendon, the head of the State Department’s Commission on Unalienable Rights, Mr. Pompeo’s arrival in Jakarta also comes after the centre-right Centrist Democrat International (IDC-CDI), the world’s largest alliance of political parties, acknowledged the Commission’s report as “a re-affirmation of the spirit and substance of fundamental human rights.”
Indonesia’s National Awakening Party (PKB), which has five seats in President Joko Widodo’s cabinet and is an influential member of IDC-CDI, is closely associated with Nahdlatul Ulama.
Critics have charged that the Commission’s report fuels assertions that there are too many human rights and prioritizes religious liberty and property rights at the expense of protections against discrimination particularly on the basis of gender.
As a result, Mr. Pompeo’s endorsement of Nahdlatul Ulama could prove to be a double-edged sword. It strengthens the group’s proposition, yet also identifies it with one faction in a global battle that not only seeks to define the soul of Islam but also fundamentally shape what constitutes a human right.

2020.10.23 10:33 Logiman43 How PIS destroyed Poland.

EDIT: This post is in an article format with pictures and graphs here
I can't be silent anymore. In 2018, out of 1076 abortions in Poland, 1 was because of rape, 25 because it was dangerous for the woman's life and 1050 because of an unhealthy fetus. It means that PIS just totally banned abortion in Poland
Too few Europeans are aware of the depth of this crisis. The current Polish government is destroying the country from inside-out with its nepotism, religious zeal, communistic tactics, social programs and funding verge organizations (or trolls). It breaks every single law, making unconstitutional laws since 2015 and destroying the court of law. How Poland is pushing EU into crisis - rise of populism. The video is 2 years old and now it's worst
PIS staffed every single judicial court with its own people (ending the impartiality of judges). The very aggressive social 500+ program increased the job inactivity of Poles to 48% (48% of 15+ Polish citizens are NEET. Unemployment is at 5-6%). The Job vacancies in Poland are at the lowest level in EU. The corruption and nepotism is rampant, more than 1000 family members and friends are in public companies or in different Ministries. Polish PIS high ranking politicians are also making money together with pimps and mafia (see scandals down there). They are also giving millions of euros from public money to the Catholic Church. They are paying trolls to spew hate on Facebook, via Whatsapp and on the web. Some of them are hiding and not prosecuting pedophiles in the Catholic Church. Poland has almost the lowest innovation in EU. In 15 indexes tracking freedom and democracy in Europe Poland went from an average position of 12 out of 28 in 2010 to 23 out of 28 in 2019. I mean, not to diminish Trump’s “awesomeness” but imagine if the WHOLE republican party in the US was Trump-like. Shady deals, family in the govt, creating discord, staffing courts with their own judges. I’m just mortified.

Destruction of the rule of law.

Some of the passages below are taken from this pdf
No member state in the history of the EU has ever gone as far in subjugating its courts to executive control as the current Polish government. The Polish case has become a test whether it is possible to create a Soviet-style justice system in an EU member state; a system where the control of courts, prosecutors and judges lies with the executive and a single party.
Across Europe, national courts recognise the judgements of courts in other member states, whether these involve commercial law, the European arrest warrant or child custody. Judges must assume that courts across the EU operate according to common values and principles set out in the European Union Treaty and in its Charter of Fundamental Rights. Once judges across the EU have reason to doubt whether courts in any member state provide effective judicial protection, the legal order on which the EU rests collapses.
Freedom house - How PIS captured Poland’s Courts

Constitutional Tribunal changes

It all began with the constitutional crisis four years ago. Constitutional crisis and the destruction of the rule of law In 2015, parliament changed the law on the Constitutional Tribunal, which rules on the constitutionality of legislation. The changes allowed them to annul the nominations of three judges made by the previous parliament and appoint their own. It shortened the terms of the tribunal's president and vice-president from nine to three years. The tribunal ruled the move unconstitutional in an open rebellion, but the dispute remains unresolved. Julia Przylebska - was illegally named the president of the Tribunal court by the president. And now Kaczynski, the PM have meetings at her house. Nice separation of power
There's too much to describe. For further info please visit the link. It is an amazing summary of the whole ordeal. timeline

Supreme Court changes

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, said one of the most controversial reforms was to do with the Supreme court, which, among other duties, is responsible for confirming election results. The idea was to lower the age of retirement for Supreme Court justices from 70 to 65, but allow the Polish president to grant a five-year extension to whomever they deemed worthy. In 2019, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) — the EU's highest court —ruled this was illegal, after an interim decision ordered 20 already-sacked judges be reinstated. Of course, PIS chose 2 new Constitutional judges, A politician Pawlowicz with communistic past and Piotrowicz, also a politician and a prosecutor that was an active communist during the 80 that prosecuted Solidarnosc. Both of them are above 65 years old.

Ordinary court judges

There were also moves to try a similar tactic in the general court system for judges and public prosecutors, lowering the age of retirement for women to 60 and for men to 65, down from the current 67. Under the reforms the justice minister, who is appointed by the ruling party, would have the power to extend a judge's term. The laws were somewhat adjusted after pressure from the European Commission, but in November 2019 the ECJ shot down these laws, too, citing gender discrimination and political influence over the judiciary.

Disciplinary measures for judges

Another PiS addition allowed judges to be investigated and sanctioned for their court rulings. The disciplinary hearings and procedures were to be carried out by judges selected via parliament. These reforms were criticized by the European Commission because "judges are not insulated from political control and thus judicial independence is violated." The commission brought legal action against Poland on this matter in October 2019.

National Council of the judiciary takeover

In 2017 PiS remodeled the National Council of the Judiciary, which selects candidates for appointment as judges by the President of the Republic. This allowed it, in the short term, to control appointments to the Supreme Court – including to a newly created Disciplinary Chamber, which hears disciplinary cases against judges, and to a new Extraordinary Appeals Chamber, which adjudicates on electoral issues. Over time PiS’ take-over of the National Judicial Council allows it to reshape the entirety of the judiciary. Fifteen of the 25 members of the National Council of the Judiciary were previously elected by judges themselves, as is common practice across Europe for such bodies. These fifteen judges are now elected by the majority in the Sejm, the lower chamber of the Polish parliament. The other ten members of the National Council of the Judiciary are: four members from the Sejm itself (all four members of PiS), two members from the Senate, one representative of the President of the Republic, the Minister of Justice, the president of the Supreme Court and the president of the Supreme Administrative Court. In total 23 of the 25 positions are directly appointed by political authorities.
After the election of the new KRS, a publication of the list with the names of judges declaring their support for specific candidates was refused. The Supreme Administrative Court ruled that those names must be disclosed. However, the Chancellery of the Sejm has yet to carry out the NSA’s ruling. The Constitutional Tribunal (TK) and the President of the Personal Data Protection Office have been roped into guarding the secret. KRS destruction

Muzzle bill

The muzzle bill passed Dec 2019, victimize judges questioning the legitimacy of the government’s legal appointments, saying it is unlawful to “show hostility to other authorities of the Republic of Poland and its constitutional organs or to critisize the basic principles of the Republic of Poland.”The bill also delegalise the preliminary questions to the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU). The bill also allows to fire judges ( which is unconstitutional according to the Constitution). In average Ziobro dismissed a judge every day and a half from its position of president of court source

In the latest special Covid19 law (already 4th lol) PIS smuggled an article straight from a communistic playbook about prosecuting people that critique the president. Political scandals

Illegal presidential pardon

Illegal presidential pardon for CBA chief Kaminski In 2013, Law and Justice (PiS) MP Mariusz Kamiński – who served as head of the anti-corruption agency from 2006 and 2009 – was found guilty of overstepping his powers. He was sentenced to three years in prison and was banned from holding public office for ten years. Polish President Andrzej Duda pardoned Kamiński even though he was still appealing his sentence at the time. The case against Kamiński was then discontinued. A supreme court judge said that the president interfered in the legal process because Kamiński was proven neither innocent nor guilty when he was pardoned, making a future ruling redundant. The judge said that the president can pardon someone after any final appeal has been heard “because then he is not interfering with the judiciary”.

Merging the General Prosecutor with the political Minister of Justice

The general prosecutor role was merged with the minister of justice Ziobro. source. This handed Ziobro and his subordinates greatly expanded power to politically interfere with rank-and-file prosecutors, their decisions, and their freedoms of speech and association. Poland Is Purging Its Prosecutors
200+ public prosecutors that are loyal to the Minister of Justice Ziobro (from PIS) All of them got promotions (or someone from their family) or pay raises. another list

Destroying the military

The creation of a territorial defense unit- a civilian army led by the ministry of defense to control “the situation inside Poland”. In addition, there was a purge of generals. and killing multibillion deals with France. About 37 generals and 47 colonels left. Why? Because they had to answer to a 27-year old assistant to the Defense Minister, former pharmacy assistant without a university degree. The Rzeczpospolita daily newspaper reported that Misiewicz was given a top communications job with PGZ ( largest defense consortiums in Central Europe) that pays $12,500 a month, huge sum in a country where the average pre-tax wage is about $1,150 a month. source
PIS decides to overhaul 40-years old t-72 instead of investing in German tanks. Not enough ammunition, uniforms NVG and other gadget went to the above unit,
In 2015, the Defence minister Macierewicz raided the Nato center in Warsaw at 1am to take control of documents and place their man at the helm

The ministry of Justice is funding trolls to destroy judges

Ziobro-Piebiak paid Troll scandal The Onet news portal published a report alleging that Deputy Justice Minister Łukasz Piebiak “arranged and controlled” an online campaign against Judge Krystian Markiewicz, the head of Iustitia, a judicial organization critical of the government’s efforts to restructure the judicial system, as well as against other inconvenient judges. According to the Onet report, Piebiak operated and financed an online campaign by a woman called Emilia who allegedly sent over 2,000 letters and emails about Markiewicz to other judges as well as to pro-government right-wing media. The messages contained fabricated, semi-confirmed and gossipy details of the judge’s personal life. According to Onet, Emilia obtained Markiewicz’s personal address from Piebiak so she could send him one of the letters.

Taking over the state media

State media was taken over by PIS and is using mass propaganda and here Not only they are a propaganda tube but they also offend polish citizens ie – translation: defenders of pedophiles and alimonies-takers are the ones against judiciary reforms. They call every peaceful protest as a coup
The same can be said about the GUS – general statistical bureau. It is controlled by PIS and it is known to “change” metrics so every Inflation or unemployment metrics can’t be trusted.

LBGT-free zones and Xenophobia.

Fear against refugees and calls for xenophobia. A leaked draft of a new Polish migration policy discriminates against Muslims, ranks foreigners according to ethnicity and breaches human rights
My article Why the Polish government is against LGBT?
PIS is supporting LGBT free zones where a thrid of Poland is declared as LGBT-free. During the presidential elections in 2020 Gay “ideology” is worse than communism, says Duda - PIS president.

Destroying education and HealthCare.

PIS cancels the in vitro program Polish government program that covered most of the in vitro costs was immediately cut by the Law and Justice Party when it came to power in late 2015, even though Poland has one of the lowest birth rates in the EU. Catholic Church opposition to IVF is widely seen as one factor in the Polish government's decision.
PIS also increased the minimum wage at the beginning of 2020. It created a weird paradox where a teacher and a starting MD is earning less than the minimal wage because they get paid from public money and the minimal wage change is for the private sector. And PIS wants to ban sex ed by labeling teachers as gay activists and pedophiles. Critics say Poland’s governing Law and Justice Party is wrecking the education system for political gain — and students are suffering.

Environment?

Destruction of the oldest European forest in Poland by Minister of Environment Szyszko The Bialowieza Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage site that sprawls across the border between Poland and Belarus, occupying almost 580 square miles of woodland and providing home to rare European wood bison among others. At least 10,000 trees are thought to have been felled in Białowieża, since the Polish environment minister, Jan Szyzko tripled logging limits there in 2016. The EU’s highest court has ruled that Poland’s logging in the Unesco-protected Białowieża forest is illegal, potentially opening the door to multi-million euro fines.
“Our (water) resources are comparable to those of Egypt,” it said in the report bearing the ominous title: “Poland, European Desert”

Nepotism and colleagues in state-owned companies

PIS won the elections by wanting to fight nepotism. The most famous was “24yo Misiewicz, a former pharmacy assistant without a university degree was in the defense industry under Macierewicz. The apparent favoritism has raised ethics concerns in a party that won office promising to fight corruption.” source There is even a webpage listing more than 1000 cases of nepotism under PIS Pisiewicze
Latest data show 162M PLN to 84 PIS oligarchs and Colleagues

Illegal budget for 2017

The 2017 budget "was adopted" not in the Sejm assembly hall, but in a smaller room where the so-called parliamentary session was held immediately as a follow-up to the meeting of the parliamentary causus of PIS, where no reliable counting of vates was possible, and with many allegations taht the opposition MPs were not allowed in. [Constitutional Democracy in Crisis?, Oxfoord, 2018, p.268]

Ex-communists in PIS ranks. And PIS is very anti-left and anti-PRL.

They are accusing the opposition – PO - to consist mostly of ex-communists or communistic party members or collaborators. The issue is that most members of PO fought against the communism and spent months/years in prison in the ’80. On the other hand, the PIS party members scarcely fought for polish liberty and some of its party members are former communistic party members or communistic prosecutors like Piotrowicz! Some Polish TC judge are also ex-PRL members. Here is a list in polish of all current PIS party members who served as PRL members during the communistic era. So, PIS is fighting against itself. Another list with 20 names of ex-party members now in PIS

Funding the Catholic church with public money

PIS is very Pro-Catholic, most of their voters are devout Catholics. So it is no surprise that PIS is funding religious orgs from public money. Since Law and Justice came to power in 2015, Father Rydzyk’s businesses have received at least $55 million in subsidies from at least 10 ministries and state companies. His Radio Maryja station, which reaches millions and is often the sole source of information for many older voters in rural Poland, offers a daily diet of horror stories about a world without faith, where gay people control the political agenda, universities are corrupted by “neo-Marxists,” and the Roman Catholic Church is under mortal threat. Rydzyk Embroiled in Corruption Allegations
Hiding Pedophilia. Map of 259 victims of catholic pedophilia. When a documentary was released before recent local elections revealing devastating examples of how priests sexually abused children and how church officials covered it up, many in PIS saw it not as evidence of an institution that lost its way, but one that needed to be defended. Piotrowicz, the above communist prosecutor, dismissed in 2001 a case against a priest accused of raping six girls.
Polish PIS president Duda pardons a paedophile that raped his own daughter. He makes the pardon a week before elections

Smolensk commission

The so-called assassination of Kaczynski's twin president brother in Smolensk created 90M PLN of costs. PIS created a "cult" around his death and even created a special commission that would prove it was an assassination. Kaczynski was using it on every occasion Don't wipe your treacherous mugs with .... Ofc they didn’t prove anything and they buried the topic. Every 10th of every month for 3 years, PIS party leader Kaczynski was making a "show" commemorating his dead twin brother. He was using the police to secure his demonstration even if he has no lawful power (he is neither a president, neither the prime minister). New law expanding police surveillance and the police is getting raises after raises to keep them happy. The commemorations, the commission and the damages (paid only to the politicians’ families, not to the crew) amounted to 91M PLN.

The welfare revolution

PIS is also very pro-family. The party is giving away 500zl per month for every kid. In short, it has “bought” the elections. The polish economy is unable to sustain such an endeavor roots of populism. And it costs the economy 80B PLN between 2016 and 2019. The best part? Rate of births is negative for the last couple of years and inflation is still growing. According to the PIS Stats bureau it is 3.5% and growing. However, many journalists made their own baskets of normal good and services and the inflation is closer to 10%. Additionally there is a growing debt that PIS tries to hide by shifting some debt into other Funds. One of them is the “Solidarity fund” that is not counted in the overall polish GDP, that is to support people with disabilities will pay for the 13th and 14th pension of people 65+.

Funding propaganda and trolls

Computational Propaganda in Poland: Russian troll factories
PIS bought the Pegasus spyware to spy on its citizens In September 2018, private broadcaster TVN24 reported that Poland’s state audit body, NIK, was questioning an outlay of over 33 million zloty (€7.6 million euro) by the Justice Fund, a government fund to help victims of crime. According to TVN, the money went toward the purchase of a “new system to spy on telephones and computers, the most expensive system in the history of Polish secret services.” Reports that the covertly purchased system could be Pegasus — a top-performing spyware that is impossible to track — surfaced last week.

Funding public TV stations

Polish public TV stations should be impartial and public. Not favoring any party nor government and give the same screen time to every party equally. Unfortunately, there was a purge of journalists the moment PIS won the election and the propaganda is stalin-like. Look at this graph how it changed. Polish TVP is the mouthpiece of the govt. In 2020 PIS voted to give an additional 2B pln per year for 5 years to public tv.
Public Main TV making fun of US ambassador by reading the tweet with a derogatory accent

Scandals

PIS has hundreds of scandals that each would destroy a modern government. They defrauded billions of PLN over the years, put 1000’s of family members in different state-owned companies. Below are listed the main sexual and financial scandals.
  1. Sex hotel of the head of the Audit office Marian Banaś , a Law and Justice (PiS) politician and recently appointed chief of Poland’s Supreme Audit Office has been heavily embroiled in a corruption scandal, another to hit the ruling party just weeks before the country votes in a parliamentary election. Mr Banaś served as finance minister from June to August this year, and is a key figure in the party. Mr Banaś concealed his possession of a tenement house in Krakow from his financial disclosures. This property was then revealed to have deep running connections with a local, criminally-run escort agency. He claimed that the house was given to him by an old friend whom he met in the Home Army, which he then renovated. In his disclosures, he claimed he would sell the house, which never happened. Banaś claims that this was due to the buyer’s inability to get a loan. Investigations have further revealed that Mr Banaś agreed to rent the property for 5000 zloty a month, 10,000 zloty lower than its estimated market value, according to Gazeta Wyborcza. Just as the scandal could not apparently get any worse for Mr Banaś, further investigation by journalist Bertold Kittel revealed criminal links. When Mr Kittel entered the property he found at the reception an infamous Krakow criminal known as one of the brothers K – Wiesław or Janusz, who control escort agencies in the region. While still under investigation, there have been suggestions of contact between the two.
  2. "Alleged" Pedophila and Sex trafficking scandal of House speaker Wirtualna Polska learned the contents of the message of CBA officer Wojciech J. to the prosecutor's office about the failure of the head of the CBA, Ernest Bejda. In the background is a lost record with a recording of one of the leading PiS politicians who should have sex with a minor Ukrainian girl lost. His name falls on the document. In the message, Wojciech J. refers to several reports that he was the head of the office in connection with the "unauthorized access to his armored cabinet during his absence" submitted. From this vault, a record should be lost in escort agencies from the Podkarpacie region. One of the leading PiS politicians should have sex with a young Ukrainian in the recording. The statement signed by lawyer Beata Bosak-Kruczek mentions the name of Sejm spokesman Marek Kuchciński.
  3. Health minister Szumowski alleged to have bought £1m of PPE from ski instructor friend during pandemic. And givng away £65m grants to companies run by brother public anger has exploded after Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza reported that Szumowski bought masks with fake certificates from a skiing instructor who is friends with his businessman brother, Marcin. Poland’s Health Ministry reportedly spent five million zloty (£1m) on 120,000 FFP-2 type face masks and 20,000 surgical masks that were later found not to meet safety standards, Politico says. The company that sold the masks was registered on the 30 of March and won the govt. contract on the same day. Critics have also questioned Szumowski’s previous dealings in government. Polish news network tvn24 reports that while serving as deputy science minister in 2016-17, he gave 300 million zloty (£60m) in grants from Poland’s National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) to OncoArendi Therapeutics, a research company run by his brother. Another company in which Szumowski was a shareholder, Life Science Innovation (LSI), was reportedly given a 24 million zloty (£5m) NCBR grant just days after he took up the ministerial post.
  4. Same Health minister Szumowski bought 1.2 thousand ventilators for PLN 200 million from a company owned by an arms dealer, not a single device was delivered

2020.10.22 10:07 HaplessScribbler Trans-friendliness at the T14

Hi everyone, it’s your local stressed out trans guy splitter here with an effortpost.
I've been looking up info about the trans-friendliness of various T14 law schools, and I thought I might as well compile it into a post for myself as well as the other trans people I've noticed floating around LSA. Also, I didn’t want to work on my personal statement.
LSAC sent out a survey to all of the ABA accredited law schools about LGBTQ diversity in 2018, which is where I'm primarily taking this info from, supplemented by google and comments I’ve read on LSA.
Please feel free to add info about non-T14 schools in the comments. I've limited my summaries of the survey responses to the T14 because those are the schools I'm personally interested in and a man has limits.
Georgetown:
Georgetown chose not to fill out the survey. That worries me and makes me think they’re either trying to hide something or so apathetic they can’t bother to copy-paste in their antidiscrimination policy. If Pepperdine and Notre Dame can fill it out, then so can you Georgetown.
edit: based on comments below my guess is trending towards "apathy".
Georgetown does have an easy to read map of unisex bathrooms on their website, and I was able to find some classes related to LGBTQ civil rights in their online course catalog. There was also this post from a trans student at Georgetown, who seemed overall satisfied with the way the University was treating them.
Cornell:
I looked up the one prof they have listed under "Openly LGBT faculty members" but it isn't clear how she identifies. I find it hard to believe that there's only one out professor on the staff, but maybe she's the only person who volunteered to have her name listed?
They have a clinic for LGBTQ law.
They only have one unisex bathroom. If you've ever been to Cornell's campus, you'll know that it's huge, so that is concerning. I couldn't get their bathroom map to work for me, so I was unable to check if it is in a central location or in some far-off corner. (edit: a Cornell student commented, saying that the bathroom is centrally located). Unfortunately, their one bathroom is still better than the next school, because…
Northwestern:
Has no unisex bathrooms in the law school. Not one! I checked their website to see if that had changed since 2018, and the only unisex bathroom on the Chicago campus is two blocks away in the medical school. I guess people who don't pass yet/ are nonbinary are expected to wear diapers?
They also put less effort into filling out the survey than any of the other schools (unless you count Gtown), giving one-word answers to all but the very last question.
Duke:
They have a map of unisex bathrooms throughout the campus. There looks to be quite a few! Good for you, Duke. I was worried about Duke being in the South but this is very encouraging.
Like Cornell, Duke only lists one Prof as being out, but again, I suspect that he volunteered to be the example and isn't the Only Gay (tm). Unclear how he identifies.
Their answers imply that they have only one class related to LGBTQ issues.
UVA:
They claim to have unisex bathrooms on the survey, but when I looked at their bathroom map there were none marked in the law school. The closest is in an athletic rec center that is a 5 minute walk away. There are unisex bathrooms elsewhere on campus but it seems misleading at best to answer "yes" to that question on the survey.
Berk:
Looks like they have one unisex bathroom per building in the Law School- except for the Law Library, weirdly. May be a problem if you suffer from the Mariko Aoki Phenomenon.
Their answers imply that they have only one class related to LGBTQ issues, which seems odd considering that this is Berkeley we’re talking about.
Michigan:
They say they have unisex bathrooms, but I was unable to find a map. If anyone has a link to that, or can tell me how many of the buildings have them, please let me know.
Lists 4 profs as openly LGBTQ, instead of just one example or leaving it at a "yes", when asked if they have queer profs. Their specific identities are unclear. They also go into a lot of detail about 4 different LGBTQ-related courses at the school.
At the very end of the survey, under Additional Information, they note that Michigan was "the first law school to graduate an out-transgender person". I'm not sure how they know that, but it's neat.
They also promise to connect all of their admits who identified as LGBTQ on their app with a student active in OUTLaw.
Overall I get the impression that they took the survey really seriously and put a lot of thought into filling out. Their answers are the longest of any of the T14.
Dean Z explicitly talks about using they/them as a singular pronoun on her YouTube channel so that's another piece of evidence that says they're thinking about the needs of their trans and nonbinary students. (She's fine with it for both nonbinary people and as a replacement for he/her, if you were wondering.)
Penn:
Looks like they have unisex bathrooms in 3/4 of the law school buildings.
They list a single prof as being out (unclear how he identifies), and five courses related to LGBTQ issues.
I also found an article written by a pair of Penn 2Ls about the university being sued by a woman claiming to have been fired for being trans. Rather than saying she was fired for other reasons, Penn filed a motion claiming that gender-identity discrimination was not illegal (this was in 2019, so pre-Bostock). They withdrew the motion less than a week after filing it, but still, what the fuck Penn?
I've heard Penn called "the most LGBTQ-friendly Law School" but I haven't found any proof that they are better than, say, Michigan- especially when you focus specifically on trans people. Anyone who is trans themselves or has trans loved ones can tell you that when institutions claim to support "LGBT rights", what they often mean is actually "LGB rights".
NYU:
They list unisex bathrooms in 3/7 law school buildings, not including the library.
They gave mostly one-word answers to the questions, but go into detail about three LGBTQ-related courses and one civil rights clinic.
Campus is right next to the Village, so that would be convenient. You could even have lunch at the Stonewall Inn- google says it’s a six minute walk from the law school.
Columbia:
They claim to have unisex bathrooms, but unlike the other schools, do not provide a bathroom map. I'm sure they exist, but it's not that helpful if we need to go on a toilet treasure hunt to find them. edit: A Columbia student commented with a bathroom map! They say it's out of date, but there is at least one unisex bathroom in the main law building, and more throughout campus.
They give a huge list of classes when about LGBTQ-focused coursework but many seem only tangentially related, such as the Seminar in Mass Incarceration. Maybe it has a lecture on trans people being forced into the wrong prisons? I’m just speculating on that one.
They have a gender focused law-journal, a Sexuality and Gender Law Clinic, and an entire Center for Gender and Sexuality Law. I found one post from someone saying that Columbia “sometimes treat[s] LGBTQ students like garbage” but with no further explanation.
Chicago:
The University has unisex bathrooms, but I was unable to check how many, or where they were located. There's a broken link to a unisex bathroom map on their Outlaw chapter's website, so hopefully it will be re-uploaded soon.
Their survey answers include a mission statement from their Outlaw chapter in the student organization section, but it leaves out any mention of trans people. They don't even say "LGBT", instead preferring to write out "gays and lesbians" each time. I checked the school website to see if this description had been updated in the two years since the survey was published, and it had not. If their chapter of Outlaw sees fit to leave trans people out of their mission statement, I can't help but wonder what sort of reception trans people get at Chi.
They state that trans people are "welcome at the Law School and both the University", but then end that same paragraph with the statement that "The Stonewall Scholarship is available for students who demonstrate commitment to the advancement of legal rights for gays and lesbians," leaving out trans students again. It's especially glaring considering that the scholarship is named after a riot started by trans women.
Harvard:
Provides a link to their unisex bathroom map right in the survey responses- the only school to do so. They have them in most but not all buildings making up the law school. Harvard started a LGBTQ civil rights clinic in 2019, and they link to several classes related to LGBTQ issues as well.
They say they have LGBTQ profs, but don’t give any examples.
Stanford:
Their website says that “The university is aiming to have gender-inclusive single-occupancy restrooms in all buildings by 2020”, but doesn’t say whether they were successful or not, and the bathroom map is illegibly small. At minimum, the library and faculty building have unisex bathrooms.
The University says it has “many prominent LGBT scholars” and a “variety of academic classes” but doesn’t go into specifics.
They also have a huge document on their website about being trans at Stanford. It’s not specific to the law school but it has a lot of really useful information.
Yale:
Gave mostly one-word or answers to the questions, aside from a copy-paste of their non-discrimination policy and a link to their course catalog. They link to Yale Outlaw as well, but it requires a Yale login to access.
I also found some news articles about Yale suing the state of Connecticut in order to make more of their bathrooms gender-inclusive: apparently building code regulations were stopping them? They won on appeal in the state Superior Court and converted a bunch of stalls in the main law building. The fact that they were willing to take Connecticut to court in order support their trans and nonbinary students is very encouraging.
-----
TLDR; Dean Z says trans rights, Northwestern doesn’t mind if you wet yourself, and Penn claimed to have the legal right to discriminate against its trans employees for about a week in 2019.
If anyone has a correction or something to add, I'd love to hear it in the comments! I'm especially interested in anecdotal info about the social culture at Cornell, UVA, Michigan, and Duke since they are in smaller cities. Can a gay trans guy get a date in Durham? The people want to know.
I’m open to PMs as well if current students would rather have me edit it into the post for added anonymity.

2020.10.17 00:05 yeah275 Are there any good LGBT+ dating sites besides Grindr?

Grindr has been pretty disappointing on my end, especially when looking for distance-based dating and I was wondering if there were any other apps like Grindr not as focused on hookups and shit

2020.10.13 14:49 rusticgorilla Lost in the Sauce: Fox News launders unverified Russian intel on Trump's behalf

Welcome to Lost in the Sauce, keeping you caught up on political and legal news that often gets buried in distractions and theater… or a global health crisis.
Housekeeping:

Trump’s Russian laundromat

The Trump administration has been using conservative outlets like Fox News to launder unverified Russian intelligence intended to denigrate Democratic officials and candidates. In the latest instance last week, DNI John Ratcliffe declassified handwritten notes from 2016 by then-CIA Director John Brennan stating that he had briefed President Obama on Russian activities, including a reference to Hillary Clinton’s campaign attempting to “vilify Donald Trump.” Fox News was the first to publish the notes.
Brennan accused Ratcliffe of selectively declassifying documents in order to "advance the political interests" of Trump ahead of the election:
"These were my notes from the 2016 period when I briefed President Obama and the rest of the national security council team about what the Russians were up to and I was giving examples of the type of access that the US intelligence community had to Russian information and what the Russians were talking about and alleging," he added.
Ratcliffe has approved the release of even more information meant to assist Trump, including “a large binder full of documents” he gave to the Justice Department. "At my direction, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence has provided almost 1,000 pages of materials to the Department of Justice in response to Mr. Durham's document request,” Ratcliffe confirmed.
There is nothing illegal about the actions allegedly taken by the Clinton campaign, as detailed in the released documents. As Lawfare explains, the declassified memo originated from the CIA’s Counterintelligence Mission Center:
Importantly, it is not a crimes report. Rather, as the name suggests, the purpose of a CIOL is to pass operational leads to the FBI for counterintelligence purposes. In this case, the CIA had information indicating that a hostile foreign intelligence service may have spied on a U.S. presidential campaign. Even if the intelligence was questionable, it still presented a significant counterintelligence risk—which is why, as Ratcliffe’s letter says, it was reported to the FBI...
Meanwhile, Trump tweeted that he has authorized the release of every document related to the “Russian Hoax” and the “Hillary Clinton Email Scandal. Tweet. He then added:
All Russia Hoax Scandal information was Declassified by me long ago. Unfortunately for our Country, people have acted very slowly, especially since it is perhaps the biggest political crime in the history of our Country. Act!!!
  • In an interview on Fox News a couple of days later, Trump expressed displeasure that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had not yet released the emails deleted from Clinton's private server: "She said she had 33,000 e-mails...They're in the State Department, but Mike Pompeo has been unable to get them out, which is very sad actually. I'm -- I'm not happy about him for that, that reason. He was unable to get -- I don't know why. You're running the State Department and you get them out.” (clip)
  • The very next day, Pompeo appeared on Fox News to assert: "We've got the emails, we're getting them out." Asked if they would be released before the election, he said, "I certainly think there'll be more to see before the election." (clip)
Buzzfeed News took Trump’s tweets to a judge to gain the release of the entire unredacted Mueller report before Election Day. US District Judge Reggie Walton directed the Justice Department to “confer with the White House” and report back to the court the “official position regarding the declassification and release to the public of information related to the Russia investigation.”

Durham probe

For the second straight week, the media is reporting the Durham investigation will not produce a report prior to the election. Last week, AG Bill Barr reportedly told top Republicans that they should not expect any further indictments or a comprehensive report before Nov. 3.
Trump publicly attacked Barr for what he sees as the slow progress of the Durham probe. “I think it’s a terrible thing. And I’ll say it to [Barr’s] face...See, this is what I mean with the Republicans. They don’t play the tough game,” Trump told Rush Limbaugh on Friday.
  • Earlier in the week, Trump sent an all-caps tweet calling for the arrests of his political rivals: “DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS, THE BIGGEST OF ALL POLITICAL SCANDALS (IN HISTORY)!!! BIDEN, OBAMA AND CROOKED HILLARY LED THIS TREASONOUS PLOT!!! BIDEN SHOULDN’T BE ALLOWED TO RUN - GOT CAUGHT!!!” Trump tweeted.

Court cases

A three-judge Appellate Court panel ruled that Manhattan D.A. Vance can enforce a subpoena seeking President Trump’s personal and corporate tax returns. The panel was made up of two Clinton-appointees and an Obama-appointee. Trump’s attorneys are expected to appeal to the Supreme Court.
They concluded that the president did not show that Mr. Vance had been driven by politics. “None of the president’s allegations, taken together or separately, are sufficient to raise a plausible inference that the subpoena was issued out of malice or an intent to harass,” they wrote.
Prominent Trump and GOP fundraiser Elliott Broidy was charged with conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Prosecutors say Broidy accepted $6 million from a foreign client to lobby administration officials to end a federal investigation related to the looting of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad fund, known as 1MDB. The court filing also accuses Mr. Broidy of seeking the extradition of a Chinese citizen from the United States.
  • Note that Barr received a waiver to participate in the investigation of 1MDB despite his former law firm’s involvement in the case. Steve Bannon was arrested earlier this year on a yacht belonging to one of the individuals tied up in the case, as well.
Trump appeals order to continue Census count to the Supreme Court. A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit upheld a lower court order allowing the 2020 count to continue through October. The administration has asked SCOTUS to put an immediate hold on the injunction while it appeals.
The Supreme Court punted a decision on access to abortion, keeping open the option of revisiting the case at a later date. The Trump administration asked the high court to require women seeking the drugs for medication abortions to visit a doctor’s office or clinic. The order was unsigned but Justices Alito and Thomas declared their approval of the administration’s request in a separate filing.
“While COVID-19 has provided the ground for restrictions on First Amendment rights, the District Court saw the pandemic as a ground for expanding the abortion right recognized in Roe v. Wade,” wrote Alito and Thomas.
Other court cases to note:
  • Lawyers for E. Jean Carroll asked a judge to block the DOJ from intervening to represent Trump in her defamation lawsuit against the president. Her lawyers say the law in question, the Federal Tort Claims Act, does not apply to Trump — or to any other president. They also said that Trump, in any case, was not acting in his official role when he denied Carroll’s claims. Oral arguments in the case are scheduled for Oct. 21.
  • The DOJ admitted to “inadvertently” producing altered versions of notes from former FBI officials McCabe and Strzok that were turned over to Michael Flynn’s defense team and filed to the court as potentially exculpatory evidence. As Marcy Wheeler explains, this explanation doesn’t match all the evidence.
  • Court-appointed adviser John Gleeson, a retired judge, urged District Judge Emmet Sullivan to take the president’s comments about the case into account when making a decision about whether or not to grant the Flynn-DOJ joint effort to permanently end the prosecution. Gleeson notes that Trump’s tweets provide evidence of political pressure to drop the case against Flynn: Trump successfully pressured the DOJ to “create a new set of rules that only apply to Michael Flynn and will never apply to anyone else.”
  • A federal judge in California has ordered that Twitter reveal the identity of an anonymous user who allegedly fabricated an FBI document to spread a conspiracy theory about the killing of Seth Rich, the Democratic National Committee staffer who died in 2016.

Administration

Voice of America: Five suspended officials at the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) are suing the agency, its new CEO and several of his most senior aides, alleging they are breaking the law — routinely — in pursuing a pro-Trump agenda for the Voice of America news service.
David Kligerman, who has been suspended from his position as general counsel of the agency by Pack, told NPR that the case was necessary to get the courts to enforce the firewall. (He is not a party to the case, though he is cited in it as a whistleblower harmed by Pack's actions.) Kligerman and the five plaintiffs jointly filed a whistleblower complaint late last month, alleging Pack sought to oust them under a pretext of "security concerns" because they challenged his intrusion into journalistic decision-making.
  • Reminder: CEO Michael Pack, an ally of Steve Bannon, started his tenure by firing the heads of four organizations under USAGM. He then refused to renew the U.S. visas of more than 70 foreign journalists who work for VOA, vaguely accusing some of them of being spies. Pack tried to fire the board of the Open Technology Fund, an organization that supports Internet freedom initiatives, but a court blocked the terminations. Nevertheless, Pack succeeded in cutting off a large portion of its funding, forcing the non-profit to suspend over 80% of its projects. Finally, Pack ordered two political operatives he installed as his aides to investigate Steve Herman, the VOA White House bureau chief who reported on Pence’s disregard for masks, for anti-Trump bias.
Bureau of Land Management: William Perry Pendley, head of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), is refusing to leave his position after a judge ruled he is illegally serving as chief. “I have the support of the president,” he told the Wyoming Powell Tribune. “I have the support of the secretary of the interior and my job is to get out and get things done to accomplish what the president wants to do.”
CIA appointment: Bert Mizusawa, a retired major general who served as an advisor to Trump’s 2016 campaign, was quietly installed in a senior advisory role at the CIA earlier this year. The move is spurring discussion among some former agency officials, who say the arrangement is highly unusual.
“An outsider with no internal sponsorship?” said one of the former officials. “That never happens.”
...Trump allies outside the administration have signaled frustration with Haspel in recent weeks, accusing the CIA chief of blocking the declassification of documents relevant to the investigation into his 2016 campaign’s ties to Russia that they view as exculpatory.
Trump has appointed Justin Peterson to the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico, sparking conflict of interest allegations. Peterson previously represented hedge fund bondholders pushing the board to pay them billions of dollars. Rep. Nydia Valazquez (D-NY): “As a member of the Board, Peterson would have a critical say in how to restructure the Island’s debt, but his coziness with bondholders is a serious red flag and a clear conflict of interest.”
A hate group employee is now leading diversity & inclusion efforts in the Department of Education. Weeks ago, Sarah Parshall Perry was defending J.K. Rowling on the Family Research Council podcasts. Now, Betsy Devos has bought Perry aboard to oversee inclusivity within the DOE.

Trump money

NYT revealed that Trump “engineered a sudden windfall” in 2016, moving over $21 million from a Vegas hotel Trump owns with billionaire Phil Ruffin, through other Trump companies, to his campaign.
“If Trump took out a bank loan in the LLC’s name for the purpose of financing his election, then the Trump campaign violated its legal reporting requirements by failing to disclose the loan, and failing to disclose that Trump’s Vegas property was used as collateral.”
The Times also reported that the LLC in question–Trump Las Vegas Sales and Marketing–claimed a deduction on the payment made to Trump in 2016. If the $30 million loan was, in fact, used to finance the president’s then-money-starved campaign, the potential criminality would be amplified.
In an apparent quid pro quo, Ruffin asked Trump for a favor after his inauguration: revive the high speed train project to bring gamblers from California to the Vegas strip. The Obama administration considered but turned down a $5.5 billion loan for the train. This past March, the Trump administration approved the project.
Among the train’s chief beneficiaries will be Mr. Ruffin and the other grandees of gambling who became a vital font of political money for Mr. Trump when he needed it most. And, of course, Donald Trump himself.
Another NYT report showed that Trump “reinvented” the swamp after he took office, setting up an extensive quid pro quo network with private businesses and special interests. Over 200 companies, special-interest groups, and foreign governments patronized Trump’s properties while reaping benefits from him and his administration.
Just 60 customers with interests at stake before the administration brought the Trump Organization nearly $12 million during the first two years of Mr. Trump’s presidency, The Times found. Almost all saw their interests advanced, in some fashion, by the president or his government.
...During Mr. Trump’s campaign and the months leading up to his inauguration, the in-house magazine at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida announced nearly 100 new members, a number of whom had significant business interests in Washington. The tax records show that in 2016 alone, the club’s initiation fees delivered close to $6 million in revenue.
...More than 70 advocacy groups, businesses and foreign governments threw events at the properties that had previously been held elsewhere, or created new events that drove dollars into Mr. Trump’s business.
Donors also paid for the privilege of giving money to his campaign and super PAC. Mr. Trump attended 34 fund-raisers held at his hotels and resorts, events that brought them another $3 million in revenue. Sometimes, he lined up his donors to ask what they needed from the government.
Trump claimed a $21 million tax break for leaving the woodland surrounding his New York mansion undeveloped, a figure inflated by what appears to be a fraudulent appraisal. The value of the 212-acre estate was based on the premise that Trump could build and sell 24 manions on the land. However, building anything on that property was impossible, due largely to objections by neighbors. Trump was paid by the government not to build mansions that he never could have built, in other words.
In addition to the conservation easement tax break, Trump in 2014 also classified Seven Springs as an investment property, rather than a personal residence, and wrote off $2.2 million in property taxes as a business expense, the New York Times recently reported.
Trump’s family members have described the home as a family retreat in the past, and the Trump Organization’s website still characterizes Seven Springs that way. “Today, Seven Springs is used as a retreat for the Trump family,” the website says.
Trump’s adult children have brough at least $238,000 of taxpayer money into the Trump Organization by traveling to their family properties with Secret Service. “The president’s company billed the U.S. government hundreds, or thousands, of dollars for rooms agents used on each trip, as the agency sometimes booked multiple rooms or a multiroom rental cottage on the property,” WaPo reports.
The records also show about $29,000 in federal payments to Trump properties that related to travel by Donald Trump Jr. Trump Jr. stayed repeatedly at the Trump hotel in Washington — just blocks from his father’s residence at the White House...
In the records obtained by The Post, travel by Ivanka Trump and her family accounted for more than $42,000 in federal payments to Trump properties. Much of that total came this spring, after Ivanka Trump had urged other Americans not to travel.
US taxpayers picked up the tab for billionaire US ambassador's stay at Donald Trump’s Scottish resort. The billionaire US ambassador to the UK, Woody Johnson, ran up a bill to US taxpayers totalling more than £1,000 in a single day while staying at Donald Trump’s flagship Scottish hotel and golf resort.
American Oversight, a non-partisan, non-profit ethics watchdog: “That Donald Trump uses his office and American tax dollars to prop up his failing businesses is widely known and shameful. That the US ambassador to the UK would use taxpayer money to play golf is simply embarrassing.”

Immigration

Border wall: The Ninth Circuit on Friday ruled that President Donald Trump’s allocation of military funds for construction of his border wall was illegal. In a 2-1 ruling, the three-judge panel lifted a stay on a lower court order, thus putting an immediate stop to all border wall construction. The one dissenting judge was Daniel Collins, a Trump appointee.
Family separation 1.0: Former AG Jeff Sessions and Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein led the push to prosecute all undocumented immigrants even if it meant separating children from their parents.
[Rosenstein told] the five prosecutors that it did not matter how young the children were. He said that government lawyers should not have refused to prosecute two cases simply because the children were barely more than infants.
Family separation 2.0: Customs and Border Protection touted agents’ “rescue” of a Honduran woman who just gave birth. What border officials didn’t mention was that, hours after their purported rescue, they separated the Honduran immigrant from her newborn and detained her pending possible removal.
  • “They told her she was going to be sent back to Mexico without her baby,” said Amy Maldonado, who is legally representing the mother.
Detention: Inside the US Marshals’ Secretive, Deadly Detention Empire: Due in large part to Trump’s aggressive immigration policies, the Marshals population is approaching historic highs. About two-thirds of all prosecutions between October 2018 and April 2019 were related to immigration crimes.
Deportation: ICE officials have started to implement a policy that allows officers to arrest and rapidly deport undocumented immigrants who have been in the US for less than two years - all without a hearing in front of a judge.

2020.10.12 01:31 liv-andletdie I’m new here and I need help

I’ve recently just come out as trans and I’ve been struggling to get out there on the dating scene. I never had much luck before I came out, but those avenues are closed to me now that I’m not going by my old pronouns and dead name anymore. Does anyone know of any app or dating site that might be useful to meet other trans people interested in dating or other LGBT people interested in dating who aren’t put off by the idea of dating a trans man?

2020.10.11 18:44 -OwO-whats-this is there any good way to find guys my age ? (15)

im 15 as stated in title, it seems so difficult to find guys my age. lgbt groups are scarce where i am, and the ones that do exist in my area only have lesbians or bi women in them. there isnt an easy way to out either like for example using a dating app or site since i am as stated before i am a minor. the only other options like gay events or gay bars are also both off limits since there are no gay events and also once again cant go to gay bars cuz im a minor. i just wish there was some easy way to meet someone despite being a minor. and its not like i can just meet someone naturally, the most gay people in my school last year (stats because of an lgbt survey) was around 3 people excluding myself).
if anyone has any suggestions not mentioned above please comment them, i really appreciate it.

2020.10.10 07:27 LineOfInquiry Dating as a trans woman who’s still early in her transition?

Hello, I’m a 20 year old lesbian trans girl who’s still early in her transition. I’m out to family and some friends but I’m not presenting femme 24/7, I’m not on hormones yet, and I don’t pass. I’m looking for a relationship but I don’t know how to go about it, especially since most mainstream dating websites aren’t exactly trans friendly. Not to mention that I feel awkward calling myself a lesbian on these sites since I currently look like a guy and I know that’s not what most of the people on it are looking for. Are there dating sites/groups that are more lgbt or trans oriented, especially for people who don’t present as their actual gender yet? Do you have any tips or advice for someone in my position? Thank you, any answers are really appreciated 💜

2020.10.10 04:18 Draquia Fic Review: The Man Who Lived by SebastianL. A slice-of-life post-war fic in which Draco Malfoy has traded Wizarding England for Muggle New York City.

This is a very popular and also very controversial fic.
Firstly it is heavy. 250k words heavy in volume, and even heavier in content. The fic’s rating is Explicit, but not really for sexual content (although there is some of that as well). I would advise not reading this fic if you are triggered by such subjects as suicide, school shooters or police brutality – especially in the context of the Black Lives Matter movement. However, none of that breaks the rules of the subreddit, so here is a link to the story if you wish to read it.
Secondly it doesn’t read like a lot of fanfiction does. It takes place entirely outside England and most of the supporting cast are muggle OCs. It is written as a very realistic look at life and doesn’t hold back on utilising a lot of hot political themes around social justice, not to mention the themes I mentioned above.
It was published in early 2017 between January and February, and was written in advance from October the year before. I know I say this a lot about the fics I’m recommended, but good grief I do not know what this author was taking to be able to pump out that many words (let alone good ones) in such a short space of time.

Premise

12 years after the war, a heavily tattooed Draco Malfoy has built a life for himself in Muggle New York City as a youth worker. He is a happy and well-adjusted gay man, and almost entirely estranged from the magical world until an accidental wish throws the real Harry Potter into his dreams. The two cannot be free of each other during their sleeping hours until the former enemies can learn to see each other as they truly are.

Plot

Look, I’d be raising my eyebrows at a premise like that too. It’s so left field it’s practically a different ballpark. I get it. It’s a story you have to really get into before you can judge it, which is fitting because that’s also kind of the central theme of the story.
The establishing chapter shows us a day in the life of Draco Malfoy, and it feels absolutely NOTHING like canon. Draco works days as a receptionist at a tattoo parlour and evenings at an outreach center for underprivileged youth, who are largely African American and Latino. He carries a wand with him, but barely uses magic at all anymore. All of his friendships are with muggles, whom he refers to as regulars, and he seems to live a very meaningful and fulfilling life. His one drawback is his refusal to date, because he doesn’t want a wizard boyfriend and would have to lie to a muggle one due to the Statute of Secrecy, so he simply refrains from getting into relationships.
The day in Draco’s life we come upon is not a good day. His coffee is spilled, his wallet stolen, and he is asked to add a new boy into his group; Evan, who has been picked up by his mother and his school for writing a manifesto detailing his plans to shoot up the school and kill himself. At the end of this day Draco comes home and a crazy old woman outside his apartment tells him to make a wish. He brushes her off, but back in his apartment after a few drinks and with only himself to hear, he wishes for his enemies to see him as he truly is – amongst other things that I won’t repeat here.
Famous last words of course, and in his dream he finds himself in a white room with Harry Potter, the latter of whom believes he has died again and is furious that it is Draco he is meeting instead of someone he actually cares about. Draco puts two and two together from his encounter with the old woman and realises she must have been a witch or at least some kind of magical being.
From here, the story sprinkles itself along in a non-linear timeline. Sometimes we follow Draco’s present attempts to help out his boys, spend time with his friends and celebrate his 30th birthday. At others we see him try and explain himself to Harry in a way that might make Harry see eye to eye with him, although Harry is having none of it. At still other times, we start having flash backs to the time in between, to show us the trajectory Draco took from the person he was at the end of Deathly Hallows to the man he has become.
Structurally it’s a really sound plot, and this is a reflection of the author having written the entire story before publishing it online. Every chapter has a purpose, and the pacing is neither rushed nor dawdling. It also packs a really effective emotional punch because it seems to come from such an authentic place.

Writing

SebastianL’s writing quality is exceptional. Although it has a tendency to strip away the glamour that literature can give to a scene or a life, it is highly immersive and believable. Many readers have remarked on this, but the author’s ability to write OCs and bring them to life within a paragraph is unparalleled in any fanfiction I have read. This is fortunate, because there is a plethora of OCs who now make up Draco’s social life, so if they hadn’t felt as much like real people as they do then the fanfic would have suffered tremendously.
Another strength which really stood out to me was the author’s ability to write authentic-sounding dialogue, which also contributed to the fantastic characterisation. I was pretty sceptical in the first chapter because Draco was sounding very Americanised and it was pulling me out of the story. However, when you read the first scene in which Draco interacts with his mother, his entire manner of speaking changes. You can practically hear the formal British accent, and his speech patterns are suddenly spot on for canon Draco. It isn’t something the author ever draws attention to, which just seems to add to the subtle genius of it – Draco has been living in New York for 8 years, and he has developed adaptational speech patterns which revert when he interacts with people from his past.
The non-linear structure of the story telling also really works for me, especially with the type of story it is. Bit by bit we peel back the layers of what happened to Draco and Harry the past 12 years. How one grew from his suffering and the other gave in to it, and I feel like the emotional beats of the story are more effectively told with the jumps. I’ve seen this type of structure done before in a way that was confusing because it wasn’t always clear which timeline I was reading, but in Man Who Lived there is never a question because of the way it handles tense.
Whilst all the flashbacks are told in past tense, the present timeline of the story is told in present tense, and it is a first-person narrative from Draco’s POV. I’ve talked before in my harem deep dive review about how a first-person narrative goes better with present tense because it feels like an intimate look at life out of someone’s eyes, and I think that holds true here. Present tense can be jarring to read and adjust to, but for myself I completely ceased to notice it after the first chapter. The water is fine, just try to jump in for a bit and see how you feel.

Draco Malfoy and the benefits of self-insert characters

Something which took me by surprise when I was reading this story was that Draco Malfoy is not only the main character, but also an obvious author stand-in. I’ve seen Draco used as a proxy for an author’s sense of humour and critiques about the Harry Potter series before, and I’ve seen author stand-in Harry Potter more times than I can count, but I’ve never seen someone so completely put themselves into Draco’s shoes. It seemed like an odd choice. And the more I read about the author from his comments, the more I came to understand how thoroughly his experiences shaped the plot of this fanfiction.
…yeah, there is a lot of me in this version of Draco... we share a high level of snark and a sense of outrage at any perceived injustice. We also have rocky relationships with our parents over being queer in common, so it's not like I have to dig deep when I write about being estranged from a parent. I suppose Draco is like a thin, cis, magical version of me in some ways.
The author is a trans, queer man, and this is the first Drarry fanfiction I’ve read from the perspective of a queer man rather than a cis, straight woman (that I know of). There are some obvious differences in how it reads, such as it coming across as a somewhat more authentic, even gritty reading of a queer experience, and lacking the undertones of the fetishization of gay men often seen in slash fanfiction.
As the quote says, there are a lot of themes in the story about overcoming the circumstances you were born into by adopting chosen family. Draco is very close to the friends who took him in when he first came to America, is not on speaking terms with his father and has a very strained relationship with his mother. The author recounts having at one time been made homeless after he came out to his conservative family, and some of his early experiences of being accepted into the LGBT+ community and estranged from his blood relatives are echoed through Draco’s flashbacks.
On top of that, “Draco’s boys”, whom he supports at the youth center are also echoes of the author in other ways.
I do have some experience with kids like this: I was one. I was one of those kids in the outreach programs, poor as hell, not expected to graduate, and somehow grew up to be a (relatively) well adjusted adult, thanks to God knows how many amazing mentors I had along the way.
I’d say that more than any slash fanfiction I’ve ever read, The Man Who Lived is a great exercise in empathy for a perspective you might not often read about. For that alone I would recommend it widely.

Draco Malfoy and the drawbacks of self-insert characters

That said, I am not without criticisms for this story. Whilst Draco’s change from canon is handled extremely well (if you read the entire fic through), I can also see why some people get put off by this fic. Obviously it’s a good thing that Draco managed to be reprogramed away from pureblood mania, but in his rejection of Voldemort’s ideals he has also rejected magic and magical society more or less altogether. As stated earlier he barely uses his wand, only ventures into wizarding New York when he has to, and purposefully makes no friendships with any other witches or wizards. He has even vowed never to return to England or propagate the Malfoy line by having children.
I could feel myself becoming defensive in some scenes when Draco criticised magical society, because he seemed to be dismissive of such a broad amount of content of the Harry Potter books that it just comes across as the whole source material being held in contempt. It’s hard for me to wrap my head around someone putting so much effort into writing fanfiction for a work they don’t seem to like that much. Not to mention of course, that the magic of Harry Potter is one of the main reasons I love the series so much.
Then there’s the portrayal of Draco as opposed to other canon characters. I am pretty open to meta-analysis of the faults of beloved characters and even enjoy a fic which properly calls out the way Harry can be a jerk sometimes, but I’ve seen it done better than it was here. While Harry sputters at Draco’s take downs of Dumbledore and Hagrid and rages at having to be stuck with Draco in some pretty immature ways, it feels a bit like Harry is being straw-manned, and it’s kind of depressing seeing him portrayed as so bitter and stunted. Draco raises some good points, but Harry’s retorts were weak and often frustratingly left good rebuttals unsaid. Characters as author-mouthpieces frequently fall into this trap of getting to be righteous all the time and schooling everybody else about what they’ve done wrong. Draco thankfully isn’t portrayed as universally right all the time, but he clearly has the upper hand in all of his conversations about the events of the books.
It’s odd, because whilst the purpose of Harry and Draco’s conversations are to make Harry understand that Draco is a changed man, there’s this pervasive feeling that Draco is also trying to rewrite his childhood to make himself look like the victim. There are 3 moments Draco recounts which took me out of the story because they felt like overly convenient retcons.
The first one is that Dobby apparently outed a young gay Draco to his father on purpose, and so Draco has righteously hated him ever since. Dobby being petty in this way seems pretty farfetched already, but let’s also keep in mind that Dobby was a literal slave in Draco’s household, who was subject to frequent physical abuse from Draco and his parents. Even in the present timeline, Draco doesn’t seem to have any self-awareness about this, and I can only assume it was retconned in to make Draco seem like less of a turd-child.
The second is that Snape and Draco became friends long before Draco went to Hogwarts (fine, sure) and that Snape told a pre-Hogwarts Draco about his feelings for Lily (absolutely heckin’ no). The only thing keeping Snape alive for a long time was the fact that his superior legilimency kept his secret from Voldemort – there’s no way he was going to divulge it to a kid, no matter how much he liked Draco.
The third and final one was the train scene in PS. Harry recounts Draco insulting Ron’s family by calling them poor, and cementing Harry’s dislike of Draco. Draco goes into explaining mode that Ron had laughed at Draco’s name first, which because of pureblood traditions about your mother choosing your name was tantamount to saying ‘f*ck your mother’. I feel like you can write this scene in Draco’s shoes, acknowledging that Draco was a d*ckbag whilst also seeing how he was eleven and lashing out about someone laughing at his name without needing to retcon in pureblood rules. Since Draco is so good at taking Harry to task for being a jerk, I feel like he should be able to own it when he is too.

Other hot button topics

It is such a tightrope walk to try to write about systemic issues for people of colour in America, especially when the main character interacting with them is about as privileged as it comes. When I first read about Draco’s job, my cringe-o-meter shot up. I was sure the handling of this was going to be horrendously offensive and involve a lot of white saviour crap. Thankfully, this was not the case.
Once or twice commenters would pull the author up for something he hadn’t handled so well, and to his credit he accepted their criticism gracefully and promised to do better in future. I don’t think I’m in a qualified position to say whether the topics and characters were holistically handled well, but I can certainly see that a good attempt was made to handle them with compassion.
The author aims to create a bridge of understanding by having Draco portray himself as someone who was part of a cult and made horrible and destructive decisions as a teenager. From this perspective he can do his best to support his boys from becoming only a product of their environment like he used to be. Mind you, I’m still not really sold on making the wannabe school shooter into a sympathetic character, but at least the fic doesn’t attempt to justify his intentions at all.

TL;DR

This is a fanfiction unlike most you will read. It is a solidly constructed and realistic story, which for all its criticisms of the Harry Potter books is deeply heartfelt and doesn’t pull its emotional punches. I had some trouble getting into it to begin with, but once I was invested it was hard to stop reading, and despite its flaws I would highly recommend it.
The Man Who Lived gets an 8/10 from me.

2020.10.07 12:53 myALT_account0 Why did the definition of bisexual change?

Why did it change recently? The "classic" definition of bi was basically liking the two binary genders( i.e cis ppl.) Now while most sites do still use the classic one, there is a new one cropping up that i see alot of people use and its just being attracted to every genderwhich is false. This new definition that i see people use is much more similair to being pan, its a carbon copy. Like there is a real difference between the two, but if you call it out you risk being piled on for "denying someones identity" even though it wasn't right. Before someone says it, no you can't say that you can be any orientation you want. You can't claim to be gay and then recoil at the thought of being with a dude. I'm gonna be honest, it feels like bisexuality is being covered up and erased in favor of pansexualiy which is terrifying for me, like i shouldn't need an excuse because i don't wantro date out of the binary and i definitely shouldn't have to defend my sexuality. Its to the point where me and several others have been called stuff like transphobes or terf's. Like the community is toxic if you have differing views, probs more toxic then a COD match. I feel like this is all a act to be more inclusive and stuff, the thing is that the lgbt community praises acceptance and inclusion but then denounces all that are different. Anyway this is getting long, what do you guys think, im sure more then a few will disagree and hell maybe im just going crazy.

2020.09.29 20:47 LeoSunflower7 Fuck Reddit and its users....

People have no empathy or sympathy for the learning disabilities, health and mental health issues, or just any disability. Reddit is a terrible place for anyone that has these issues. No one has empathy on here. I've been attacked and all for feeling extremely depressed, Etc for "being poor little me". I got NVLD. Health issues that affect my whole body. I'm 29 now and still can't hold a job. I've never had friends only acquaintances. Even now the person I'm "friends" with is fucked up too. I've known her for years. I still don't understand body language (embarrassed a couple couple of weeks ago), don't (never been taught, only know my own observation) dating, Etc. LGBT community doesn't really like disabled people. Apparently I'm negative because I can't do a lot of things others can and if I dare "complain" I'm the problem. I try to explain but no one listens to me as usual my whole life. They don't have my brain and memory issues due this shit learning disability. Hell, I probably have slight Autism too. I'm always called weird and not in a good way. I've had teachers, doctors, my family, Etc look at me strangely for the way I speak or do things. Embarrassed to be seen with me in stores. I can't always stop talking because I don't know to interpret things differently ( do have some possession of visual learning). NVLD definitely gets worse with age even if I was in treatment. I have been having a lot flare ups from my autoimmune disease lately and it's making irritable. People don't want to understand or try to see my reasons for the way they always say I'm making excuses even though I'm not or they don't know me (I barely know me). Don't feel like I have an identity. Hate my body and my ugly ass appearance even with proper dressing and hygiene.I hate Reddit and wished I never joined. If I come on this site to get off what's on my mind I get told I'm complaining. My family isn't the kind you talk things with and it's awkward if you attempt it. I'm the LGBT in my family. Had a lesbian on another subreddit tell me that even with the same genatalia, lesbians wouldn't date someone who calls themselves non binary or queer only women. I didn't know until 23. Didn't know I had NVLD until 23 and the Nueropsychologist didn't even understand NVLD at the time to try to explain what it is and now I realize why therapy over the years since my teens never helped because no one literally understands it. Same old generic therapy advice . Especially for adults. My mom thought I was Autistic at 3. My brothers have always been abusive of some way in my life and don't talk to me because of their embarrassed of me. No one cares or wants to listen because they think you're just making excuses. Reddit folks fuck you thinking you know anything about me. Fuck this site. I'm done. I got no one to vent too. So sorry if comes off as complaining and just not understanding my own fucking brain!

2020.09.25 14:36 VisibleConfusion69 Open Letter to Steve Huffman and the Board of Directors of Reddit, Inc- If you believe in standing up to hate and supporting black lives, you need to act

Open Letter to Steve Huffman and the Board of Directors of Reddit, Inc – If you believe in standing up to hate and supporting black lives, you need to act
Dear Steve,
On June 1, you shared a letter on Reddit’s blog “Remember the Human – Black Lives Matter”. In this letter, you claim “as Snoos, we do not tolerate hate, racism, and violence, and while we have work to do to fight these on our platform, our values are clear.”
As of today, neither you nor any other Reddit admins have shared this letter anywhere on reddit.com. However, the response to this message was swift on Twitter, where you were rightfully labeled as hypocritical based on your long and well-recorded history of defending racism and white supremacy on this site.
Among the many responses was this message from former CEO of Reddit, Ellen Pao.
I am obligated to call you out: You should have shut down the_donald instead of amplifying it and its hate, racism, and violence. So much of what is happening now lies at your feet. You don't get to say BLM when reddit nurtures and monetizes white supremacy and hate all day long
Many others shared links and screenshots of your past statements saying “Open racism and slurs are fine to post on Reddit”.
The problem of Reddit’s leadership supporting and providing a platform for racist users and hateful communities has long been an issue. Nearly six years ago, dozens of subreddits signed the original open letter to the Reddit admins calling for action. While the Reddit admins acknowledged the letter and said it was a high priority to address this issue, extremely little has been done in the intervening years.
On June 5, you shared this update on /Announcements, Upcoming changes to our content policy, our board, and where we’re going from here. In the post, you stated that there is a need for continued adjustments of Reddit’s content policy to address racism and that this remains a priority. These continued statements that you hear us, that this is a priority, or that you are working on it are not enough. It has been five years since your return as CEO and this still remains Reddit’s most glaring problem.
Steve, if you and Reddit genuinely care about the values of standing up to racism and hate, then you need to back it up with real action. As moderators on this website who have dedicated countless hours to keeping this site running, we call on Reddit to take the following steps:
At /AgainstHateSubreddits, we have laid out the many failures of Steve time and again to stand up to white supremacy on this site time and time and time again.
With a website with the impact of Reddit on the broader conversations being held in communities around the world, this website needs real leadership and real action.
We hope that Reddit will not just share empty platitudes — but will take a meaningful stand against hate, and take these recommendations to heart.
This letter is co-signed by more than 200 300 350 430 550 650 800 communities representing well over 200 hundreds of millions of subscribers:

Dating Bisexual Women - Where to Find Her
You are attracted to her but are confused. You think that she may feel the same way about you, but she is with another man. Is she bisexual or is she just being friendly? This is a question that plagues many lesbian or bisexual women who are looking to date, other bisexual women. Below are some good places to look and find women who could be bisexual and interested.

https://preview.redd.it/j36qixlrbvo51.jpg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0f2632fa567b7e39cbf3e53f43b3bede99d4c7a1
Your first stop should be an online dating site for bisexuals. Here, you will find women who will indicate their sexual orientation on their profiles and let you know first hand whether or not they are bisexual. This will save you the embarrassment of walking up to a girl in a bar and asking her whether she hooks up with both men and women.
Many women, whether gay, straight, or bisexual tend to feel comfortable in the company of gay men as they know that they will not be harassed. A gay bar is therefore another great place to meet bisexual women. If you already have gay friends who frequent that particular bar, you could use their help in pointing out a bisexual woman for a potential date.
Be sure to attend your next LGBT gay rights rally where you are likely to meet bisexual women. This is a great platform for championing gay rights, with the added bonus of meeting a potential love interest. The important thing is, to be honest, and upfront and ask her if you are in doubt about her sexual orientation.

2020.09.22 21:16 jcravens42 established, credible cross-generational online conversation program

Sages & Seekers is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that combats age segregation and social isolation through meaningful conversation. Prior to the novel coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic, its signature eight-week program took place in-person. In it, older adults packed with wisdom (Sages) are matched with young people looking for mentors (Seekers). Shortly after COVID-19 hit, by necessity, Sages & Seekers introduced the online version Robinson and Brennan are in: “Quarantine Conversations.” Now, over the course of four weeks, five intergenerational pairs meet together online as a group weekly for one hour. They break into pairs for 45 minutes of that time, to allow for more in-depth conversation and relationship building. So far, there have been 16 of the online programs. There is a long wait list of older adults ready to participate once more students find out about the program and enroll.
“Teens and older adults are the two loneliest age groups in America,” says Elly Katz, executive director of Sages & Seekers. “For the past ten years, we’ve been connecting these marginalized groups, and the pandemic is increasing isolation.”
Read here about two people in Los Angeles, one male, 63 and Black, one 17, female and White, were brought together by Sages & Seekers in weekly Zoom conversations, discussing everything from sports to LGBT advocacy.
How to Enroll
REQUIREMENTS:
-Must commit to all weekly meetings.
-Must be on time.
-Must be 14-24 years old, or over 60 years old.
-Must have a Zoom compatible device with a good internet connection.
If you meet these requirements, you fill out the application on the Sage & Seekers web site. AFTER you fill out the application, you choose a program date and time that fits your schedule.
Confirmation
Our programs fill up fast so we will send you a confirmation email if you get into the program you requested or are wait-listed. Then you:
-Fill out and return the consent/release form you will receive.
-Keep the Zoom Link so you can access your program.
-Let us know if any problems arise that keep you from attending all meetings.
Enrolling in one of our online programs requires that you commit to being present for ALL the weekly meetings because you will be paired with someone from another generation. If you are absent, they have no partner.

2020.09.18 16:17 CLOUDY-LIZARD I hate being LGBT+

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate being bi. It’s not that, I’m comfortable with my sexuality for the most part. It’s all the bullying going on in the “community.” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been called transphobic, exclusionary, panphobic, ect for no reason. I don’t even know why I was called panphobic. I never said anything about them, only that I was bi. There is so much hate, misogyny, misandry, transphobia, Bi phobia, acephobia, ectphobia, it’s terrible! And it’s not even boomers or gen X giving me the most trouble. It’s people close to my own age group of millennials and gen z. Boomers and gen X have surprisingly given me the most support. It’s just constant belittling of one another with no end in site. Constant attacks on each other’s sexuality, preference, if you don’t date me your ______phobic! LGBT was a good community, now it’s devolved to a land fill of shit set on fire. I can’t exactly leave the community either because I need someway to signal others that I might be interested. It just makes me ashamed to be bi.

2020.09.09 12:02 ThrowRAfaraway I don't know how to move forward

In the art community, I [25] met someone [22M] that I had clicked almost instantly with since October of last year. Just like anyone else, we had similar interests: drawing/enjoying art in general (of course), creating characters and worlds with them, being apart of lgbt, similar traumatic pasts/life struggles, and more. Every single day, we would talk to one another and not miss a beat. Leaving one another morning greetings before starting the conversation of the day and leaving each other good nights to end the day with.
At first, I had felt a strong platonic endearment towards them and just absolutely loved spending time with them any moment I could get out of the day. I find myself to be a person that loves to love people especially upon first meeting them as long as I can somewhat fit my energy with theirs comfortably. I guess you can say that I 'fall in love' with the experience of meeting someone new that I actually enjoy talking to and going out of my way to do things with them, learn about them, talk to them, and just...to be around them until it progresses. The more that I feel comfortable with the person, the more that I open myself up and let the other person know about myself too as I am one known to be quite enigmatic around others.
I found that the more that I talked to him and shared deep parts of myself and opened up, the more that I was becoming somewhat enamored in different directions that I didn't realize myself. Constantly, I'd recognize a new flurry of feelings in me that I'd immediately let fly over my head and resolve it as being 'platonic love' for a dear friend. I planned on sending them a huge care package full of things they loved and liked from candies, plushies, and even my own drawings made especially for them. Along with all of these sweet materialistic things and homemade gifts, I attached my final gift to them which was a very long letter that basically explained how grateful I was to have met them and how much they meant to me. If I could remember correctly, I believe it was 10 handwritten pages of me writing from the heart rather than the mind.
It was then after I had finished that letter and reread it before sending it off, that I realized in such a slow reaction what exactly I had said in it and how I really felt. I knew then and there that I didn't love this person a whole lot as a friend, but more. A developing crush. I spend endless days and nights trying to convince myself that I really just loved this person as a beloved friend and nothing more. Nothing romantic nor anything sexual. Just. A. Friend.
Boy, did my brain and heart convince me otherwise.
Everyday then on, I had continued to talk normally to them as I had always done but the 'I love yous' felt a lot different. 'I love you my dear friend' began to feel more like, 'I love you, but, can you love me too? (romantically)'. I began to feel the pains of an unreciprocated crush in my heart and my head. I crushed on them so hard I gradually began to actually fall in love with them but constantly tried so hard to convince myself to get over it and to treat it just between friends and nothing more because I had the greatest fear that if they ever knew how I felt, our friendship would go a whole different direction and tear apart. That I would eventually end up losing them and that hurt my heart more than the feeling of being in love with them.
One night, we had our usual conversations and sharing the things we loved. At some point, I discussed past bad relationships that I had been in and the last one I was in that I broke off before I eventually first met them. I rambled and went on about how grateful I was to have met them during a time when I felt so incredibly sad constantly. It eventually led to me slipping up and confessing how, 'I'm sorry ahead of time if I end up catching hard feelings for you' and thus began the unraveling of all the feelings I had kept up inside of me. We talked about how I was feeling and how I had felt about them, how things would be and all the fears that I had kept up inside of me. I was scared confessing all of these things to them, crying as I typed away all my feelings from my heart into words for them to understand how I felt about them. At the same time, I kept constantly thinking about how this was it, this was how our friendship would spiral and get weird and awkward to the point where we'd just fall apart.
'I've done made him uncomfortable and all because of my stupid feelings'
To my surprise, he seemed to be on board with the way I was feeling. Being respectful, he told me that I should allow myself to feel these kinds of feelings because I always tend to bury them and hope for the best which he knew I was notorious at. He appreciated and was happy to hear that I was communicating to them exactly how I was feeling and that they might have been on board with reciprocating this crush back to me. He loved talking to me a whole lot and considered wanting to love me back romantically. He was new to concepts such as long distance relationships or the idea that someone had actually liked them for them as a whole rather than a specific trait of them such as their humor, face, or personality. But, he wanted to meet me first and go on dates with me in person before anything would progress on further. I felt a huge wave of relief wash over me and the weight burdening my heart and head had been lifted and more of the new weight of loving them despite the fact we werent exclusive or anything. We wanted to feel things out in person better since things are a lot different when in person rather than behind a screen through text sometimes.
I planned to meet them eventually in person in the next couple of months after that. We continued to talk daily with our usual conversations or exchanges of creative characteworld building and what not that happened in our everyday lives. Our conversations gradually drifted and became conversations touched more with words of love, endearment, and affection both romantically and even sexually.
When the day came that I was to fly over and see them for a week (We live about 10 hours away from each other in the same state), things began to change when I got there. They share an apartment with their friends as his roommates and we hung out with them too on and off. Before we were to see each other, he had made it clear to me that because of intimacy trauma and fears that he had in his past, he might grow to be distant at times which I understood completely and respected. The first few nights, we were close in contact and shared a bed with each other. Exchanged kisses, hugs, touches, and even shared our bodies with one another. Eventually, things began to spiral downwards, his intimacy fears struck and he grew distant from me. No more close contact nor affectionate exchanges occurred unless one of the days he felt good and in a good mood, otherwise, boundaries were made and I had gradually felt I couldnt be around them at all nor their friends. I felt awful. I didn't know how to have fun with his friends anymore nor did I know how to act. I didn't know what was and wasn't allowed. I distanced myself too. I really wanted to respect them and their space and I constantly kept to my own. It finally got to a point where I just felt that they no longer wanted to be near me or even spend time with me alone or at all. He constantly would stick close to his friends and not acknowledge me and I felt a huge wall between us. Was this the distancing he spoke of? I tried so hard to understand and be understanding. On the good days where he could be close to me, I just felt more and more confused. I finally came forward and asked bluntly if they liked me at all anymore or if something happened that I might have done that made them ping pong back and forth with things. If he wanted to pursue anything further, I wanted a straight answer.
He came clean to me and told me in all honesty that, he had realized he did not have the energy nor the emotional capacity for a relationship or anything romantic at all. His reasoning being that things in his life were changing and it was easier to conceptualize romance when they weren't going through things in life. He was apologetic for misleading me, telling me that they still loved me a lot as a friend and that they still wanted to continue talking to me and hanging out with me as we had always done before. My heart broke in that instant but, I needed to pick myself up and be understanding to this. I absolutely still loved him a whole lot, he was practically my best friend already at that point. So of course, I wanted to put these feelings behind me and not let it ruin our friendship. But the feelings, he felt it was important that I felt them and something that I must figure out on my own on how to move forward with them. He wasn't asking me to crush my feelings but to 'feel them out' as time passes. I decided at first that I had wanted to distance myself from them after this trip, that I wanted to help myself get over my feelings for them.
I completely failed my plan and didn't distance myself from them at all. I continued my attempts to talk to them daily and normally after that trip. The only thing I ended up doing was shutting my heart away from any feelings of loving them in that direction but, I also failed that too. I thought that this would have been fine if I still loved them a whole lot like this from afar instead. I didn't know if they still liked me like that anymore or if we could ever try again in the future. His words of me 'allowing myself to feel these feelings out and figuring out what to do with them' confused me more than ever because it gave me a space to allow myself to think that there could maybe...potentially be a chance that we could try again in the future when he felt ready since he did not explicitly tell me we had to stay as friends or that I should move on with my feelings of love for them. Everyday since then, I was just confused with my feelings. I was in a constant battle with myself if I should move on and just focus on our friendship or keep these feelings at bay inside of me and keep being, the usual in hopes for something...anything.
Everyday since then, I've just cried my heart out and would constantly try so hard to google so many sites, forums, and threads on 'How to get over your crush' or 'How do I move on?'. I didn't know how to because deep down inside, I was too stubborn to be apart from someone I liked. If someone picked me up and tried to separate me away from sitting next to the person I loved, I'd just come crawling back to sit right back next to them. I just wanted to be near them all the time! I didn't want to distance myself or 'give it a lot of time' and just hoped that maybe my feelings would figure themselves out and transition it's own kind of love back to the kind specially for a dear friend.
Then...he slowly began to stop talking to me. He put less effort in talking to me like we used to even when they were busy with their life. He no longer left me nice good morning messages or messages to let me know to have myself a wonderful day ahead of me or goodnight messages to let me know that he hoped my night had been well when I couldnt send off these messages on my own. I continued to put in the effort to talk to them as normally as I did but it felt like talking out into the void now. I receive one-liners or cheap wordings as replies. We don't even explore artistically anymore or talk much about anything no longer. I'm beginning to fear the worst happening that we wouldn't know how to talk to each other anymore like we used to as friends and that we'd grow apart and just...not be friends anymore. I'm afraid to lose them at all and I don't know what to say anymore or what to bring up. I keep overthinking and coming up with a million thoughts about how maybe I should give them breathing space and that maybe they'd come back around since maybe talking everyday was a little exhausting since they were now busy with things in their life. But then, the fear that if I give too much space, days of not talking anymore will turn into weeks then months then...who knows when we would talk again. Everyday this pain and fear eats away at me that I even have dreams almost everyday about them both good and bad. My heart aches every day and a part of me really just wants reassurance from them about whatever is going on with this silence between us now (but letting my overthinking believe its just...people being busy and that they'll come around) and the other part just, almost feels like giving up and letting them go completely and let this silence leave us broken apart.
I don't know how to let go of my feelings for them and I dont know how to approach them and communicate anything without feeling like Im going back to square one when they told me that I should just feel what I feel and go with the flow with it and figure it out while this new obstacle of us not talking anymore has occured. I dont know how to move forward at all and I dont know how to talk to my beloved best friend anymore...these confusing lingering unknowns are leaving me feeling very insecure that even Im afraid that I'll end up being the one that pushes the friendship away from being too overbearing with my worrisome anxieties.
TLDR; Met through art community and hit it off as great friends. Ended up confused with my strong platonic feelings that transitioned gradually to strong romantic feelings. Accidentally let my feelings slip through conversation months into the friendship and had the crush reciprocated. Decided we would figure out how to take these feelings after meeting in person. Planned a trip to see them for a week. Flirted a lot and got very close before seeing each other in person. Went down to see them and things go downhill. Was told they had no emotional capacity for a relationship due to life changing things but still very much loved me as a friend and wanted to keep hanging with me as friends. Told me its important to feel how I feel and to figure out how to move forward with my own feelings. Came back home and constantly feel strong yet confusing feelings for them and want to get over it but cant put distance or time between us by myself. They end up changing suddenly and dont talk to me as usual anymore and I can't tell if we are going to fall apart and no longer be friends with the radio silence between us now and I strongly want to believe and tell myself that they're just busy and that when they come around, we'll click and talk again. I don't know how to approach them or how to talk to them anymore but I still love them with all my heart and fear for our friendship.
